Past Continuous

Use was/were plus -ing for activity in progress at a past time. It often sets background, combines with a shorter simple-past event, or shows simultaneous activities.

• At eight, I was reading.
• I was cooking when the phone rang.
• While she was presenting, they were taking notes.
